This updated second edition of LAND NAVIGATION HANDBOOK: THE SIERRA CLUB GUIDE TO MAP, COMPASS & GPS could also have appeared in either our Sports or Military columns, but deserves mention here to be sure the widest possible audience receives notice of the completely updated edition including new text by Clyde Soles. Here is a pocket-sized 'bible' of outdoors survival, providing basic keys on everything from using maps and compass to using an altimeter, navigating by kayak on lakes, understanding GPS navigation and how to choose and use a GPS unit, and even how to navigate by moon and sun alone. Photos, drawings, and a fold-out topographic map provide plenty of visual illustration and examples of the details and make for an invaluable instructional reference both in the field and for at-home study.

The second edition of Land Navigation Handbook (2005) is the best book I have read on the subject of navigation. The explanations and expert guidance on choosing and using a compass, the distinction between magnetic and true north, choosing and using a GPS unit, how GPS works and its limitations (not just for north America but for other parts of the world as well) are definitely worth reading. I have learned a lot from this book. The book is not for land navigation only, it is also an indispensable aid for marine navigation. I sincerely think every sailor should have one in his sailboat (it measures only 8" x 4.5" x 0.5") as a reference book.

I am just now getting into land navigation using a standard magnetic compass(Brunton 8040) and a GPS(Garmin 60CSx). I also have the National Geographic PA Topo map software. I wanted more information on how to interpret topo maps and coordinates and apply the info for hiking and biking. At first I though the book had too much material on maps, but the more I got into it, I discovered that understanding maps is the foundation for using a compass and GPS. I think the book covers all aspects relative to understanding land navigation.

There is too much information in this book, much more than what is needed for the average "away for the long weekend" traveller.
It covers all the info. you need to know, even though at times it assumes that the reader is already knowledgeable about the subject of navigation.

The book provides an easy to read, flowing style, making navigation concepts easy to understand. I found it very helpful.

This product works; it has multiple carrying pockets. But I thought it would be specifically for the Garmin and it's not - it's just a general carrying case.

i purchased this protector cause i tend to have butter fingers, and i think of all the times ive dropped my celly, boy if they made something like this for that id buy that too!! but seriously, it provides a decent amount of protection, while not inhibiting the functionality of the device, which seems to be the problem with cell phone protectors. if you're looking for decent protection (in my opinion its an essential) grab this. it also comeswith 2 plasticstickin screen savers.

Does not work well with my air vents. Will work on modifying the mount so it is more secure.
Great condition, good shipping time.

I'm sure you have to have the right type of vent to fit this (horizontal slants) but if you do, this works great. Its a great sub to the windshild mount.

This device is a simple solution, but execution is really lacking. The clips that go over the vent slats don't have enough tension or spring strength to hold the weight of the GPS unit. Hit a bump or go over a set of railroad tracks and you'll be fishing around on the floor for everything.
